Dr. Steven Webb to lead statewide professional association for school administrators

OLYMPIA—The Washington Association of School Administrators (WASA) is pleased to announce that members have elected Dr. Steven T. Webb, superintendent of Vancouver Public Schools, as WASA president-elect for 2016–17. Webb will assume the presidency in July 2017, following the term of the current president, Dr. Lois Davies, superintendent, Pateros School District.

Webb was named 2016 Washington State Superintendent of the year and was one of four finalists for AASA National Superintendent of the Year. He has been an active member of WASA since 1996 and served in a variety of association positions, including WASA Columbia River Region 112 president and president-elect, Professional Development Committee chair, Honorary Awards Committee member, and on WASA’s Focus on Education Committee.

“These are exciting and challenging times for public education in Washington state,” said Bill Keim, WASA executive director. “In Dr. Steve Webb, our WASA members have selected an outstanding and recognized leader who will help lead our association through those challenges, while promoting strategies to ensure that all students succeed. We look forward to working with Dr. Webb as he supports the critical work of our members.”

Webb, who has served as superintendent in Vancouver since 2008, said he is honored to serve the WASA membership.

“I’m honored to be elected by my colleagues to serve as 2016–17 WASA president-elect,” said Webb. “Together, we can cultivate hope, create opportunity, and build agency for our children and families.”

As WASA president, Webb’s goals are to:

  • Spotlight and celebrate Washington public school success stories.
  • Influence state and federal implementation of ESSA to ensure evidence-based, whole-child support and accountability measures.
  • Strengthen coalitions that advocate the state compliance with the McCleary Supreme Court order by 2018.
  • Champion the interests of frontline education leaders on behalf of our children, families, and communities.

Webb received his Educational Doctorate in Educational Leadership from Seattle University, a Master of Arts in Teaching from Lewis and Clark College, and a Bachelor of Arts in Politics and Government from the University of Puget Sound.

Prior to his work in Vancouver, Webb was superintendent of Apple Valley Unified School District, deputy superintendent/assistant superintendent at Lake Stevens School District, a high school principal/assistant principal in the Peninsula and Port Townsend School Districts, and a high school teacher in Camas and Sedro-Woolley School Districts.
